How I made the Choices video...

People are asking me on Facebook and in email how I made this video take a look.

I used my regular Camcorder, imovie, various cardstock paper of different colors, scissors, tape, a cardboard box, an empty ream of gift wrapping paper, blanket or dark sheet, and a mini-magflashlight. Here are some pictures. Note: I threw away my original box and empty ream with jagged edges on it so pretty much everything you see in these pictures is my hurried recreation of it.

1. Cutout your paper Jesus, Lucifer, and Jagged edges. The Paper Jesus and Satan are the only things I kept from the original. You're going to space your jagged edges, and you'll neet to cut out lots of them, at equal distances around the full radius of your empty ream of gift wrapping paper. This ream is full of paper but even in my video if you look close you can see the carton at the bottom creep up from time to time.

2. Cut two hole in the sides of a cardboard box and run your reem through the holes so on either side of the box you have an end of the ream sticking out. Now in this picture it's in my lap but when I shot the video the box was stationary on my office coffee table with the camera centered on it using a stack of books to reach the ream's height. You're going to spin the ream with your hands at a steady pace while you are recording on the camera from inside the box. Imagine the camera where my head is. The sheet is draped over you and the box so that no light can come in. The light that you do have is explained in the next picture.

3. Take hyper colored piece of paper or color you want to be used and tape a piece over a flashlight. That flashlight is attached to the top of your camera focused on your ream inside. My paper jagged edges are white cardstock but show up yellow because of this light.

NERD ALERT: Tips. - Practice with rate and speed of your hand spinning. Realize that you could do just about anything like this with different takes. Use the still shot function in imovie. iMovie is so basic. When it came to putting words in places that you know are not possible within imovie I did this by taking a still image of my video, moving it to power point and then adding the words wherever I wanted then saving it as a jpeg to reinsert in the project.

This is how we roll in student ministry. We don't get the big dog budget so we have to be creative and resourceful. SO now you know. Leave me a comment if something needs more explaining.

Be patient, have fun. Music by Kings of Leon.

4. Don't try to actually talk to your paper Jesus and Lucifer.

Monday afternoon from 1pm all the way until 5pm. Four hours construction and filming. Then after the boys went to bed I put it all together in imovie going to bed about midnight.

Wow, that's cool. How long did it take you to complete?

So, have you thought of offering yourself as a service to others, producing short videos for youth ministries? It would be a great resource and possibly lucrative (though perhaps a lot of work, too!) Love the video. Very creative!
